Summary
ChatHop is built to minimize data collection. We do not store the content of your conversations. Messages are relayed in real time between you and your chat partner and are not written to our database.
What we process
- Anonymous session identifier. We create an anonymous session so we can match you and enforce bans. It contains no name, email, or password.
- Username and interests you enter. Used only for matchmaking during your session.
- Hashed network identifiers. We store a one-way hash of your IP address (mixed with a secret) for abuse prevention and rate limiting. We do not store raw IP addresses.
Safety reports — the one exception
When a user files a report, we capture a short, in-memory excerpt of the recent conversation and store it in our reports system for moderator review. This is the only circumstance in which message content is stored. Reports include timestamps, a room identifier, and hashed identifiers.
Retention
Reports are retained for a configurable period (default 365 days) and then purged, except where a legal hold applies (for example, content that must be preserved under applicable law).
Legal disclosures
We may disclose information where required by law. In particular, apparent child sexual abuse material is reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as required by 18 U.S.C. § 2258A, and related data is preserved as required.
Cookies
We use essential cookies (age confirmation, consent state) and, with your consent, advertising cookies. See the cookie banner.
Your choices
Because we do not maintain accounts or store conversations, there is little personal data to access or delete. For questions, contact us below.
